Sacred Founders synopsis

Diliana Angola argued that from the time of Augustus through the early Byzantines, the "holy founders" discourse - detailed in works of art, literature, imperial honor, and the built environment - helped to legitimize the authority of the emperor and his family. The discourse on the central idea, associated with the myth of origins, confined itself to the fact that imperial men and women were sacred founders of the earth, mirror images of the founders of the divine empire.

When Constantine and his great mother, Helena, established a new capital for the Roman Empire, they began the Christian transformation of this discourse by recreating the brilliantly constructed legend. Over time, this transformation enabled women to empires, promoted the worship of the Virgin Mary, raised church-state competitions, and inspired a concise combination of imperial and Christian art.

The Holy Founders provide a bold interpretive framework that reveals a deep continuity between the worlds of antiquity and the Middle Ages, recreates a forgotten transformation in the female imperial power, and offers a reinterpretation of the old Christian art.
