Sophocles' Antigone synopsis
Sophocles' Antigone comes alive in this new translation which will be useful for academic study and stage production. The fine translation, accessible by Diane Raor, reflects the drama inherent in the play.
It provides an analytical introduction and comprehensive observations. The edition includes an article by Karen Lippmann.
Antigone begins after Oedipus and the sons of Jocasta kill each other in a battle around the property. The new king, Creon, states that the brother who attacked with a foreign army is still not buried and promises death to anyone who defies him.
The play focuses on Antigon's refusal to obey Creon's law and Creon refused to allow her brother to be buried. Each action in principle is colored by sex, personality and family history.
Antigone is a conflict between emotional figures whose radical positions do not leave room for compromise. The violent conflict between the individual and the state has strong effects on the moral and political situation today..
