Although we are used to sovereignty as a distinctive feature of the modern state and a founding principle of the international system, sovereignty as a symbolic formula argues that recent changes indicate that sovereignty has been transformed into something granted, dependent on its responsible exercise in accordance with the standards and values of the imagined international community.
Hence, we need a new understanding of sovereignty in order to clarify the logic of its current use in both theory and practice, and relate it to the broader concerns of social anthropology: what kind of world we live in, and what kind of entities the world is composed of?
