The Arts and Crafts Movement in Scotland synopsis
This trusted book is the most detailed account yet for the arts and crafts movement in Scotland. Art and craft ideas emerged from the 1860s, but not until after 1890 did they emerge from artistic circles and rose to popularity among the wider audience. The peak of the movement occurred between 1890 and 1914, when Scottish art schools actively promoted a new design, and the Scottish Home Industries Association launched a campaign to revive rural crafts. The movement throughout the country influenced the appearance of local and ecclesiastical buildings, as well as stained glass, metalwork, textiles and other furnishings that adorned them.
Technical schools, workshops and associations helped shape the arts and crafts style, as did individuals such as Ann Macbeth, WR Thaby, Robert Lorimer, MH Baillie Scott, Douglas Strachan, Phoebe Traquiere, James Cromar Wat, and others. Architects, artists and designers alike have contributed to the expansion and development of the movement within and beyond Scotland.
