The Cambridge History of Africa 8 Volume Hardback Set synopsis

The five and a half centuries described in this volume were those of the Iron Age cultures from their early and experimental stages to stages of maturity characterized by distant trade and complex and multi-level political systems. In Egypt and North Africa there was a period of religious and cultural unification when the Arabic language and the faith of Islam were adopted by the majority of the original Copts and Berbers.

In the Savannah era, this period was a period of breakthrough when Muslim traders and clerics built small but important minorities of black African converts. The Muslim immigrants invaded the Indo-Sudan, which surrounded the Christians of Ethiopia and settled in East Africa. But throughout this period African countries, large and small, were relatively strong enough to control their visitors from the outside world.

The main importance of strangers, whether Muslim or Christian, was educated observers on the African scene.
