This pilot study provides quantitative analysis of the civil elite in Mamluk Cairo. Using information on 4,631 people drawn from the 15th century biographical dictionaries, Carl Petrie explores the geographical origins of the civil elite (the distribution of scientists) and the distribution of their homes and workplaces in Cairo. Originally published in 1982.
