The Collected Papers of Albert Einstein, Volume 8 synopsis

This volume opens in the spring of 1914 when Einstein is a research professor at the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin and closes with the collapse of the German Empire after four and a half years. A large part of the documents, with more than 675 characters, have only recently been discovered by editors. The letters address all aspects of Einstein's activities and shed new light on his inner life while enriching his understanding of his published papers, presented in volumes 6 and 7 of this series.

The disintegration of Einstein's first marriage and divorce is presented here for the first time in all its complexity. The new material shows Einstein, who maintains a strong sense of moral urgency throughout the war.

Scientific correspondence documents Einstein's struggle to find satisfactory field equations for the theory of new gravity - general relativity theory - and to continue his discussion with prominent physicists and athletes about the implications of this theory and its development.
