The Conflicted Mind synopsis

One of the greatest contradictions in human behavior is our tendency to say one thing and do something completely different. We think of ourselves as positive and fair, caring for other people and our environment, yet our behavior allows us time and time again.

Part of the reason for this is that we may have separate "selves": two separate and separate mental systems - one conscious, reflective and rational, one with roots and instincts rooted in the subconscious and resisting their meditation processes, no matter how hard we try. In all areas of our lives - love, politics, race, smoking and survival - it seems that one system makes very different kinds of judgments to the other, subject to distinct and hidden biases.

The conflicting mind explores how and why this system works as it does and how we use this knowledge to encourage positive behavior change. However, the "conflicting mind" is a concept that is broader than the clash between the systems of thinking (virtual), because in one form or another constitutes the basic pillars upon which the construction of social psychology. This unique book examines major social psychology theories and research in a new light, including the Fistinger concept of cognitive dissonance, the experiences of obedience in Milgram, Bateson's description of the conflict in communication, and Bartlett's explorations of the constructive nature of human memory.

Jeffrey Betty argues that although these classical studies were sometimes brilliant and creative beginnings, they were full of flaws, which social psychology must address if it is to make the kind of influence it aspires to. By doing so, it provides a basic perspective on why we think and behave in the way we do, to learn lessons that can be learned for future social psychology. The Conflicted Mind is a great resource for researchers, specialists and students in this field as well as the general reader..
