The Rebirth of Bodh Gaya synopsis

This historical multilayered ethnography of Bud Jaya - the place of the Buddha's enlightenment in the northern Indian state of Bihar - explores the spatial politics surrounding the transformation of the Mahabudhi Temple Complex to the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002. The rapid change from a small town based on an agricultural economy to an international destination attracts hundreds of thousands of Buddhist pilgrims and visitors each year have led to a series of conflicts that pose space and meaning politics among the various Bodejaya constituencies.

David Gedi examines the modern revival of Buddhism in India, the colonial dynamics and postcolonial surrounding archaeological heritage and sacred space, the role of tourism and urban development in India.
