The Society of Captives synopsis

The Prisoners' Association, first published in 1958, is a classic of modern criminology and one of the most important books on prison. Gersham Sykes wrote this book at the height of the Cold War, motivated by the world's fascist and communist experience to study the closest thing to the authoritarian regime of American life: maximum security imprisonment. His analysis raises questions about the success of prisons in trying to control every aspect of life - or whether the strong ties between prisoners make it impossible to manage the prison without finding ways to "house" prisoners.

After being reintroduced with a new introduction by Bruce Weston and a new conclusion by the author, the Prisoners' Association will continue to act as an indispensable text for reconciliation with the modern nature of power.
