The Tanoak Tree synopsis

Tanoak (Notholithocarpus densiflorus) is a flexible and common local tree in California and southwestern Oregon. The perceptions of people radically different from the food plant to the cash crop to the garbage tree.

After studying the patterns and misuse of Tanak for nearly twenty years, plant scientist Frederica Pocott reveals a complex history of cultural, social, political and economic factors affecting the fate of the tree. This tree, valued by indigenous communities for nutritious nuts, remains a source of raw resources for a variety of industries since the North American settlement of Northwest America.

Despite ongoing protests, it is now common to kill tanoaks with herbicides in industrial forests to favor more precious Costa Rican-valued commercial timber and Douglas fir. As a non-toxic alternative, many forest workers and communities promote the production of locally sustainable sustainable hardwoods using tannac, which is not dependent on the obvious use of pesticides and weeds.

Today tanoaks suffer from massive death due to sudden oak death, a disease introduced. Bowcutt examines a complex set of factors that pave the way for the current environmental crisis of trees.

The end of the book focuses on the hoped-for changes including re-introduction of low-density burning to reduce coniferous competition for tanoaks, resistance to emerging diseases in some trees, and new partnerships among tanoak defenders, including botanists, foresters, Native Americans, plant pathologists .
