Of the more than 600 Victoria Cross awarded to British and Imperial soldiers during World War I, nineteen pilots were awarded by the newly established Royal Air Force and the Royal Air Service. Of these, four were postmortem awards, and all but one of them were officers.
Some of these brave athletes had modest backgrounds and limited education. Others were collective men from wealthy families.
