White Lives synopsis

This book explores the processes of racism, class and sex, and examines how these processes affect the daily lives of white women living in London with young children. Bridgette Berne analyzes the resilience of racial discourse in everyday life while at the same time arguing for a radical disintegration of the concepts of race created by these speeches.

Bern focuses on the experience of white mothers and their children as a key location in classroom cloning, race and sex, and a compelling account of both the mothering experience and ideas of white identity. Berne's research is unique in its approach to exploring whiteness in the context of mothering practices.

It adopts a broad perspective, and its curriculum provides a framework for the analysis of racism in everyday life. The multilayered book analysis moves from intimate work to those that interact with local and national speeches in public.

Reconsidering White Identities Through white experiments of race, white life includes many disciplines, making valuable reading for those studying sociology, anthropology, race, ethnicity, and cultural studies. Awarded BIB Philip Abrams Memorial 2007.
