World Savings synopsis
The book Global Savings is the first book to analyze the imbalance in global savings rates theoretically and experimentally. Why is the savings rate in Japan much higher than in the US? What are the reasons for the low savings behavior in Europe between these two extremes? These basic questions are addressed by experts from around the world in a series of extensive surveys.
After the introduction of the Nobel laureate F. Modigliani, theoretical background is provided at the macroeconomic level by W.H.
Buiter and micro-level by B. Kauffmann.
The experimental ideas are presented by L. Lau of the United States, Ch.
Horioka of Japan, J.-P Fitoussi for Europe and B. Ickes for Eastern Europe.
The final chapters analyze related tax issues and outline the global savings policy. This book will serve as a basic reading for policy makers and professional economists who work in macroeconomics, monetary economics and public finance.
Global savings are published jointly with Nederlandse Spaarbankbond.
